Three Poems
The Apocalypse of Evil
Bow down: I am the King of kings:
I have been crowned by the holy ones
No secret worlds incredible: I take
Their trailing skies-of evil
Dethrone their mounting egos, and illume
My name, throughout their horizons infinite;
Like unbridled fiends racing for their surfeit,
I cast them in like dead serpents, to
The fiery-nebulae-the pillars of creation
That rise and rise, at my extended command
As jealous planets and moons look on
Awaiting to follow me forever; I vanish
Mountains, weaken peaks, once horned:
Quiet sulphur-lit volcanoes, lava-filled,
Open the skis with thunder, and rain.
And evil kings and sorcerers, in the main
Who lure humankind into their crystal reefs
With viper-tongues and devil wills
With lark and horns and icy talons
I make them like dragon-skins: whereupon
They can do man, or beast, no more harm…!

Naught one thing deters me from my goal
No suns or eons, or mortal wars,
No hymns or celestial movements
It’s all within my secret storeroom,
All the endings of their sinful days, all
Within the writing of a blazon book
Whereat, the time of my soaring judgment
The time of Armageddon, and good and evil,
There I will stand among my heavens
Among the thunder-vested clouds
And the defiant armies of the earth
Will vanish, like waves in the sea
Their memories, awful, but fully clothed
And their nightmare will be instant
Shouts of demised victory, its own music
Forgotten, in remote space, in alien epochs
Yet to be-put into a hue-less prison,
And the human gods, who bear the seats
Of Armageddon: an omnipotent manifesto,
Far-posted in the backs of their minds
With eyes that roam, it corridors,
With all its dark and chaos, I will evoke
Behold, I will evoke, these little fallen Titans
Of earth, and all those beyond, who come?
Building walls, and moats, you’re cunnings
Are dwarfed among the Universal King
Too late to hide even within a moonless eve.

Grandmother’s Plot
Ella, she was my grandfather’s second
wife. Both came early on in life for
Grandpa; she was ten-years younger
than him. She gave my grandfather
nine-children, and then became dead.
To no ones surprise, and she was
buried. But little of that story is told
by anyone. The two of them lie
somewhere in separate cemeteries.
I don’t know what’s carved on her
gravestone-never have known; as
though it was by someone’s design-
untold, never to be told, buried in
some remote corner, if not hidden:
as if she didn’t belong. And at that,
she was one of those who never was.

Spring Cleaning
(A 1960s, Minnesota Poem)
During spring cleaning my
mother worked the house
as if-she was having a GI-Party:
one of those Army clean-up parties
where everything had to be ‘Spick and Span.’
Every nook and crack in every inch
of the place, clean and shiny. She
moved the furniture around-awkward
as it was-sofa chair, table and television
lifting up rugs-and still having
strength and stamina to wash walls
clean. And in the midst of it all
I often wondered, she never rearranged
the rooms. Perhaps because she didn’t
want grandpa to become disoriented.
Thus, no one had to deal with change.
And no one knew the inexhaustible
efforts she put out.
