The internet offers incredible promotional and marketing opportunities to entrepreneurs, marketers, and just about anyone out there who wants to promote themselves or their products and services online. But with all the different media outlets that the internet provides it is easy for the budding “internet rock star” of tomorrow to become confused and not know quite where to begin.
The following 5 steps can serve as your blueprint to internet success:
1. Game Plan – Before you decide on the actual mechanics of your internet marketing campaign you should decide on your goals and purpose. What is your purpose for wanting to market or promote online? Do you just want to help build up your public profile, drive traffic (and revenue) through affiliate websites, promote your network marketing opportunity, or maybe just have some fun with the internet? Who is your target audience? And once you’ve captured you audience what are you going to do with it?
Once you have decided on you goals you will be better able to design the appropriate campaigns to help you achieve your goals. But without knowing what it is you intend to accomplish on the internet it can be very challenging to focus your efforts in the right direction.
2. Create a Blog – Now that you have established your online goals you should set up your own personal blog. I highly suggest using a free platform like Blogger.com or WordPress.com. These are simple platforms that allow you to quickly create and customize your own blog. Be sure to establish your own personalized domain name as well. For example, if your name is Matthew Harris, use a domain registration website like GoDaddy.com to register matthewharris.com and then set up this domain as your blog’s main domain. This will help brand yourself in a unique way that will pay huge dividends over the course of your career online.
3. Create a Facebook Profile – You absolutely must have a Facebook page. Facebook’s popularity has exploded globally and is an incredible way to create new and maintain old relationships. It also will allow you to brand yourself on a personable level that could potentially catapult you to online success. People will view your profile page, your status updates, your pictures etc. and be attracted to getting to know you better. The types of people that you attract is of course based on what kind of content you post. We’ll discuss content in more depth at the end of this article.
3. Create a Twitter Page – Twitter is currently one of the hottest and most popular social networking websites at the time of this writing. Creating a profile is quick and easy. Following others and creating short messages or “tweets” allows you to promote what you are doing and/or your interests to a potentially global audience. The beauty of this platform is that you are able to identify like-minded individuals and follow and share their content with your own followers.
4. Content, Content, Content – Establishing a presence on the internet is just the beginning. Creating engagement and interactions with your audience is really where the rubber meets the road. So how do you create a massive “following” of people who are engaged in you and your products and/or services?
It’s simple really.
Create interesting and compelling content. And LOTS of it. “Tweeting” a couple times out of a month or posting one profile picture on Facebook IS NOT creating compelling content. But sharing information, for example, on how to remove annoying applications on Facebook is. The key is to identify topics that would be important to your target audience and provide them with solutions to problems in their lives. They will start to view you as an authority on your subject matter and will begin to share your content with their network as well.
Just a word of caution. Creating a dynamic brand and passionate following on the internet does not happen over night. So just in case your website doesn’t get a thousand hits in your first month don’t give up! The internet is like riding a bicycle, at first you may struggle to keep your balance, but once you’ve gotten the hang off it it becomes really quite simple!
