How realistic is the movie Armageddon?
I was watching the movie Armageddon the other day and I figured that if an asteroid were really to hit Earth, then the method of preventing Armageddon would be more complex.
Real methods, anyone?
Armageddon is noted for its large number of scientific inaccuracies.
does NASA is supposedly showing the movie as part of its management training programs. The idea is to find the highest number of impossible things in the movie? The record stands at 168.
Breaking up an asteroid just before it hits, wouldn’t work: you would end up with the Earth being pelted by millions of pieces. A clean break in two is physically impossible.
The only currently feasible methods start pushing against the asteroid when it’s still years away, so that the deltaV needed is small. An esthetically pleasing method I read about, is to cover the asteroid in black soot. The radiation pressure from the Sun would then do the work for you.
