just how long can humanity survive?
Sure, we are the most advanced species to have ever walked the the face of this planet. Sure, we are conservative about our existence and never want it to end. The fact is, many ages have come across this planet, we have evidence of it, and many ages have passed.
Whether it be through our own self destruction or something out of our control, when do you think the human race will come to an end? Please don’t take this question as 2012 or armageddon/zombie apocalypse stuff.
We as humans may only survive 100 years at best, but are we the fuel for our own self destruction?
Here is something we all need to understand. Our species, Homo Sapiens Sapiens, has only been here for roughly 40,000 years. In comparison to other species, that is a very short time. For 30,000 years we were hunter gatherers. Civilization is a new phenomenon in the grand scheme of things.
The question then is not, ‘how long can this last.’ The question is, “should this have ever happened in the first place?” From the information gathered in Central and South American archeological digs, there is significant evidence that shows that the quality of life for humans went way, way down as agriculture and sedentary life kicked in.
One example can be seen in the teeth of peoples found 15,000 years ago compared to teeth found in peoples 8000 years ago. The frequency of pathologies such as abscesses increased significantly. Bones showed more signs of malnourishment. There is much more. Many Anthropologists wonder if Civilization is the worst thing to ever happen to man kind.
So if civilization is doomed to fall, humans will be fine without it. We existed without it for quite some time. However, it must be said, believing that the natural state of things is somehow better is known among Anthropologists as the naturalistic fallacy. We evolved to be hunter-gatherers, that is our natural state. But natural does not imply any level of goodness.
A for the end of our species, that’s hard to say. I can tell you that many other species of hominids walked the earth before we did. Homo erectus was around for well over a million years. If we manage to make par, we still have a long way to go
